Most people understand the schedule as a list of deliverables and their due dates. To a professional scheduler that list of deliverables and their due dates is NOT the schedule, but the baseline schedule. The baseline schedule is supposed to be a static schedule that reflects the agreed upon due dates: the target schedule that should not change.
What project managers then still need is a schedule that reflects the current reality in their project and have that schedule be dynamic such that it recalculates itself every time a change is entered. That type of schedule requires that you create a complete network of dependencies, a dynamic model of the project. This dynamic schedule can then be compared to the static baseline schedule at any time.
Should professional schedulers start calling themselves ‘project modelers’?
